Beușnița WaterfallCascada Beușnița

Part of Banat

A travertine waterfall in a UNESCO-listed beech forest, known locally as 'the bride's veil.'

History

Beușnița's water rises from an underground spring and tumbles roughly 15 meters over a series of travertine ledges inside Cheile Nerei-Beușnița National Park, the same limestone country that shapes nearby Bigăr Falls. Centuries of mineral deposition have built up the terraced basins and natural steps the water now flows across, a process that's still ongoing and slowly reshapes the falls' outline over time. Local legend explains the name: a shepherdess fell in love with the son of a Bey, and her wedding veil is said to live on in the waterfall's white, foaming curtain of water cascading endlessly down the rock. The park's ancient beech forest — trees over 300 years old, sheltering brown bears, wolves, and lynx — was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2017 as part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians.
