Bigăr WaterfallCascada Bigăr

Part of Banat

A moss-covered waterfall that fans out over a limestone ledge into the Miniș river.

History

Bigăr forms where an underground spring meets a moss- and travertine-covered rock ledge, spreading the water into a wide, thin curtain rather than a single stream — the effect that made it briefly famous online as one of the world's most unusual waterfalls. It sits almost exactly on the 45th parallel, halfway between the equator and the North Pole, inside the Cheile Nerei–Beușnița National Park in the Anina Mountains. In June 2021 part of the travertine ledge the waterfall flows over collapsed, changing its shape from the one in the famous photos; forestry authority Romsilva said at the time that the formation should regenerate naturally over time, though visitors today shouldn't expect the exact fan-shaped curtain from older pictures.
