Neamț CitadelCetatea Neamț

Part of Moldavia

14th-century Moldavian stronghold that once withstood an Ottoman siege.

History

Built in the late 14th century under Moldavian prince Petru I, Neamț Citadel was designed as one of the strongest links in Moldavia's chain of border fortresses. Its defining moment came in 1476, when it withstood a siege by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror during Stephen the Great's long war with the Ottoman Empire — one of the few Moldavian strongholds the Ottomans failed to take. Left to decay for centuries afterward, it underwent a full EU-funded restoration between 2007 and 2009 and reopened to the public with 21 furnished rooms recreating how it would have looked in use, rather than being left as bare ruins.
