Palace of Culture, IașiPalatul Culturii

Part of Moldavia

Neo-Gothic landmark of Iași housing four of the city's museums.

History

The current Palace of Culture was built between 1906 and 1925 by architect I.D. Berindei in a flamboyant neo-Gothic style, replacing the earlier Princely Palace of Moldavia that had stood on the site since the early 19th century — Berindei's building actually incorporates that older palace's foundations and first two floors. It occupies the same ground where Moldavia's medieval princely court once stood, making it the site's fourth palace in succession. Today it houses four separate museums under one roof — art, history, ethnography, and science and technology — with tens of thousands of objects spanning from the Paleolithic to the 20th century, making it one of the largest museum complexes in Romania.
